Korcula is a medieval walled town occupying a small peninsula on the Dalmatian coast of Croatia, set on an island spanning 279 km² and 46.8 km in length. The old town is considered one of the finest preserved medieval settlements on the Adriatic, with a distinctive herringbone street layout engineered to channel sea breezes and shelter residents from harsh northern winds. The island of Korčula ranks as the second most populous Adriatic island after Krk and is widely known as the disputed birthplace of the explorer Marco Polo.

Vela Spila is a prehistoric cave above the town of Vela Luka on the island of Korčula, Croatia, located on Pinski Rat hill at an elevation of approximately 130 m. The elliptically shaped cavern is 40 m long, 17 m high and 40 m wide. Two openings in the roof resulted from collapse at an undetermined point in the past, admitting natural light to the interior. Archaeological excavations at the site have produced finds dating back tens of thousands of years; pottery and bone tools uncovered here are on display at the Vela Luka Cultural Centre.
