Kos Island International Airport carries the official name Ippokratis, chosen in honour of Hippocrates, the ancient physician born on Kos who founded the principles of Western medicine. Situated near the village of Antimachia in the interior of the island, it is the primary air gateway serving Kos and the neighbouring eastern Dodecanese islands. The airport is operated by Fraport AG, the German airport management group that holds a concession for several Greek regional airports. A single terminal building handles both arriving and departing passengers.

The Asklepion of Kos rises on a lush hillside with views across the Aegean Sea toward the Turkish coast. It is the island’s most important archaeological monument and one of the most famed healing sanctuaries of the ancient world. Consecrated to Asclepius, god of medicine, the complex served as a centre for worship, patient treatment and medical education. Hippocrates — the father of medicine — ran his medical school here in the 5th century BC. The Kos sanctuary became uniquely associated with rational, empirical medicine over purely religious ritual.

Nisyros is a volcanic island in the Aegean Sea, part of the Dodecanese group between Kos and Tilos. Its caldera, which occupies the central and southern portion of the island, is the dominant geographical feature of Nisyros and one of the most dramatic volcanic landscapes open to visitors in Europe. The main active crater, Stefanos, has a walkable floor some 260 metres across where fumaroles vent continuously and the ground is warm underfoot. Excursions from Kos by ferry to Mandraki, then a short road transfer, reach the crater rim in under two hours from Kos Town harbour.
