At 100 m, this is the tallest and most spectacular waterfall in the Azores, on Flores island. A 1.5 km trail through hydrangea fields leads to the base. The surrounding valley is a UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve.

Pico island's centuries-old Lajido vineyards are a UNESCO World Heritage Site -- a mosaic of black basalt stone walls built by farmers to protect vines from Atlantic wind and salt spray. The Verdelho wine produced here was once exported to Russian tsars and English aristocracy.

The westernmost point of Europe, created by a spectacular submarine eruption in 1957-58 that added 2.4 km2 of new land to Faial island. The ash-covered lighthouse and excellent interpretation centre document the eruption that triggered a wave of Azorean emigration to the USA.

Fire Lake -- a pristine crater lake in the centre of Sao Miguel inside a protected nature reserve. Accessible via a short hike from the EN1-1A road. The remote white-sand beach at the lake shore can only be reached on foot.

At 2,351 m, Pico is the highest mountain in Portugal and the highest peak in the entire North Atlantic excluding Scandinavia. The ascent to the summit takes 3-4 hours and requires registration with the national park. Views extend to multiple Azorean islands on clear days.

Since 1918, Peter Cafe Sport in Horta marina has been a landmark meeting point for transatlantic sailors from every nation. The walls are covered in painted crew plaques, an tradition dating to 1920. Caldeira do Faial Rim Walk

The 8 km circular trail around the rim of Faial's central caldera at 1000 m altitude offers panoramic views over Horta, Pico mountain and the other western islands. Takes 2-3 hours. The caldera interior is filled with a dense hydrangea forest and is off-limits to visitors.
