Frequently asked questions
Should I rent a car or hire a driver in Bali?
Hiring a car with a local driver is recommended for most visitors. Bali's traffic in Kuta, Seminyak and Ubud is complex, road signs are inconsistent, and an International Driving Permit is required for self-drive. A local driver costs little and removes all the stress.
What do I need for self-drive in Bali?
An International Driving Permit (IDP) is legally required, in addition to your home driving licence. Many rental companies also ask for a Balinese driving licence endorsement. Without valid documents, your insurance may be void if you have an accident.
When should I book a rental car in Bali?
Book 2–3 weeks ahead for July, August and the Christmas holiday period. Bali is extremely popular and vehicle availability drops quickly in peak season, especially in the Ubud and Seminyak areas.
What insurance do I need in Bali?
Full CDW is essential. Bali traffic is unpredictable, road conditions vary, and accident risk is higher than on most European islands. Ensure your policy specifically covers Indonesia and that your IDP is valid — without it, standard CDW is typically void.
