- Hot dry summer (June-September): less than 10 mm rain per month over much of the island, highs of 28-32 °C on the coast and 32-38 °C in the southern lowlands.
- Mild wet winter (November-February): 60-130 mm rain per month — the wettest part of Crete (the western mountains) gets two to three times the rainfall of the eastern lowlands.
- Meltemi wind: strong dry north wind, peaking in July-August, providing welcome cooling on the north coast but creating rough sea on north-facing beaches.
- Long swimming season: thanks to surrounding deep warm water, sea temperature stays above 20 °C from June through November.
- Fire season (June-September): high risk in the central mountains (Psiloritis, Lefka Ori) and the eastern lowlands; many trails close on red-alert days.
- Mountain influence: the Lefka Ori (White Mountains) and Psiloritis (2456 m) split the island climatically — the south coast is warmer, drier and less windy than the north.

Is the Samaria Gorge open year-round?
No — the gorge opens 1 May to 31 October, weather permitting. Spring snowmelt and autumn flash floods make it dangerous outside that window. May-June and September are the best hiking months.
Is the south coast warmer than the north?
Yes, by 1-2 °C in summer and 2-3 °C in winter. The Lefka Ori and Psiloritis mountains shelter the south from the meltemi and trap warm air from the Libyan Sea.
