El Maipés de Agaete – nekropole

Historic site

El Maipés de Agaete is a pre-Hispanic archaeological site and necropolis in the municipality of Agaete in northwestern Gran Canaria. The site contains hundreds of burial tumuli — stone-covered mounds — constructed by the Guanche people, the indigenous Canary Islanders who inhabited the island before Spanish colonisation in the 15th century. The necropolis is one of the largest of its type on Gran Canaria and is protected as an archaeological park. It occupies a volcanic hillside of black basalt above the Agaete valley, with views toward the coast.
