Climate notes
- Four distinct seasons: a true subtropical-temperate climate. Winter (December-February) is mild for Korea but the coldest in any Korean island context — averages 6-8 °C; summer (July-August) is hot and humid at 26-28 °C.
- Changma rainy season (late June through July): the East Asian monsoon front stalls over the Korean peninsula and Jeju, delivering 200-250 mm of rain per month with high humidity.
- Typhoon season (July-September, peak August): Jeju lies in the path of typhoons recurving from the Pacific. Direct hits or close passes happen most years; flights and ferries can be disrupted for 1-3 days.
- Hallasan effect (1947 m): the central volcano creates strong rain-shadow microclimates and supports its own alpine zone. Snow on the upper slopes from December into March; trails close in heavy weather.
- North-south contrast: Jeju City on the north coast is windier, cooler in winter, and gets more snow; Seogwipo on the south coast is the warmest, sunniest part of the island year-round.
- Cherry blossom and rape-flower seasons (April): one of the earliest cherry blossom destinations in Korea, with yellow rape (canola) fields blooming alongside.

Regional notes
- Jeju City (north): windier, cooler in winter (occasional snow at sea level), main airport and ferry hub. Drier south-east winds give it slightly less summer humidity than Seogwipo.
- Seogwipo (south coast): warmest part of Jeju year-round; subtropical feel, palms and citrus orchards. Catches more typhoon rain in summer.
- Hallasan summit (1947 m): subarctic in winter — heavy snow December-March, trail closures common after storms. Summer summit can drop to 10-12 °C even when the coast is at 28 °C.
- East coast (Seongsan, Udo): catches the monsoon front first; lush green spring and autumn, breezy.
- West coast (Hyeopjae, Aewol): drier rain shadow from Hallasan, sunset coast — most popular sunset photography zone.
Frequently asked questions
When is the best time to visit Jeju?
April-June for cherry blossoms, rape flowers and comfortable hiking weather; September-November for autumn foliage, low typhoon risk after early September, and pleasant 18-23 °C. July-August is the hottest swimming season but also the rainy/typhoon season.
Does Jeju have typhoons?
Yes — July-September is the active season with peak in August. Typhoons recurving from the Pacific often pass close to or directly over Jeju. Expect occasional 1-3 day flight or ferry disruptions; modern forecasts give 3-5 days warning.
Can you swim in Jeju in winter?
Not really — sea drops to 14-16 °C December-March, air to 5-10 °C. Most beaches close their swim seasons in mid-September. Hot springs (jjimjilbang) and the Saryeoni forest are the winter draws.
When is the cherry blossom season in Jeju?
Late March to early April — Jeju is one of the earliest cherry-blossom areas in Korea. Yellow rape (canola) fields bloom alongside on the east coast (Seongsan area). Jeonnong-ro and Jeju City Hall are popular roadside viewing strips.
Can I climb Hallasan in winter?
Yes, but as a snow hike with proper crampons, layers and an early start. Trails can be closed briefly after heavy snowfall. The Yeongsil and Eorimok trails are the safer winter options; Seongpanak is longer and harder in deep snow.
What is the changma rainy season?
The East Asian monsoon front that stalls over Korea in late June and July, delivering 200-250 mm of rain per month with high humidity. Jeju feels it first as it sits south of the peninsula. Expect grey overcast and 12-15 rainy days per month during changma.
When does Jeju get snow?
December-February at sea level (occasional dustings, especially Jeju City) and December-March on Hallasan summit (regular and deep). January-February is most reliable for snow scenery.
Is Jeju warmer than mainland Korea?
Yes — Jeju winters are 5-8 °C warmer than Seoul. Summers are similar or slightly cooler thanks to sea breeze. Spring and autumn arrive earlier and last longer than on the peninsula.
