- Hot wet austral summer (November-April): Saint-Denis and the windward NE coast see 200-450 mm of rain per month — January is by far the wettest. Daytime 27-30 °C with very high humidity; afternoon thunderstorms over the volcanoes are routine.
- Cool dry austral winter (May-October): the SE trade winds (alizés) dominate; rainfall on the leeward SW coast (Saint-Pierre) drops below 50 mm per month and skies are bright.
- Cyclone season (November-April, peak January-March): La Réunion sits in the heart of the SW Indian Ocean cyclone basin. Direct hits are rare in any given year but historic events have caused major damage; the island is a global record holder for one-day rainfall (1825 mm in 1980).
- Extreme microclimate split: the windward NE (Saint-Denis, Sainte-Rose) gets 2-3× the rainfall of the leeward SW (Saint-Pierre, Étang-Salé). Within a 30-minute drive you can move between 4000 mm/year and 600 mm/year.
- Mountain effect: the central peaks (Piton des Neiges 3071 m, Piton de la Fournaise 2632 m) are 8-12 °C cooler than the coast; snow falls a few times most winters above 2700 m, and Maïdo regularly sees frost in July-August.
- Active volcano: Piton de la Fournaise erupts roughly once a year, almost always within the protected Enclos Fouqué caldera; eruptions briefly close the access road but rarely affect coastal towns.
