The coastline here is raw and beautiful: white sand coves separated by rocky headlands, turquoise water, and a laid-back village atmosphere that still feels genuine. Selong Belanak, 15 km west of Kuta, is widely regarded as one of the most beautiful beaches in Indonesia -- a long crescent of pale sand with consistent beginner-friendly surf and very few tourists. The surf around Kuta Lombok is best from May to October when the southeast swell kicks in. Breaks like Gerupuk (accessible by short boat ride), Mawi, and Are Guling offer waves for intermediate to advanced surfers. The area has a growing community of digital nomads attracted by reliable fibre internet in coworking spaces, cheap villa rentals, and a social cafe scene that has developed rapidly since 2020. Accommodation ranges from basic Rp 100,000 guesthouses to well-equipped private villas.

Trekkers — Volcano hikers — Adventure travellers — Photographers Mount Rinjani (3,726 m) is the reason many travellers come to Lombok. Indonesia's second-highest volcano offers a two to three day summit trek that ranks among the finest in Southeast Asia -- a challenging ascent rewarded by dramatic views of the crater lake Segara Anak, the active inner cone Gunung Baru, and on clear days the silhouette of Bali across the strait. The trek begins from either Senaru or Sembalun villages in the north, both very different in character and difficulty. Senaru is the traditional starting point -- a small village on the green lower slopes with cool temperatures and a waterfall walk to warm up the legs. Sembalun on the east side starts higher and is steeper but rewards with open savannah landscapes and a faster route to the crater rim. All trekkers must hire a registered local guide; independent climbing is not permitted. The Rinjani trekking season runs from May to November -- the trail is officially closed during wet season months due to landslide risk.
Families with Children
Families — Young children — Parents wanting safe swimming and easy access Senggigi on the west coast is the most practical family base on Lombok -- it has the island's best selection of mid-range and resort hotels with pools, beachfront access, restaurants, and reliable services. The beaches at Senggigi have calmer water than the surf-heavy south coast, making them safer for children. The area also has the most regular boat services to the Gili Islands, where gentle shallow water and abundant sea turtles make for unforgettable snorkelling with kids. Gili Air is particularly well suited to families -- it is quieter than Gili Trawangan, the shallow reef is accessible without a boat, and resident sea turtles come very close to shore. The entire island is car-free; the horse carts (cidomo) used for transport are a novelty children enjoy. Back on Lombok, the Sasak culture villages near Sade and Rambitan offer an engaging cultural experience where local weavers and craftspeople welcome visitors -- a worthwhile half-day trip from Kuta or Senggigi.

The smallest and quietest of the three Gili Islands, it has pristine white sand beaches, crystal-clear turquoise water, and an atmosphere of unhurried calm. There are no motorised vehicles -- only cidomo horse carts and bicycles. A handful of boutique resorts and private pool villas are scattered along the island's west coast, facing a perfect sunset. Underwater, a submerged bronze sculpture garden is a unique snorkelling experience. Gili Air offers a similarly serene vibe but with a few more restaurants and a livelier (though still quiet) evening atmosphere -- ideal for couples who want seclusion without total isolation. On Lombok itself, the newer boutique resorts and eco-lodges around Kuta Lombok have private pool villas with dramatic hill and ocean views. The Pink Beach (Pantai Merah) near Jerowaru in the southeast is one of those rare spectacles -- a genuinely blush-coloured shoreline best explored as a private snorkelling day trip from Kuta.

Gili Trawangan hosts the highest concentration of dive schools on the island, with PADI courses from beginner to divemaster available year-round. Sea turtles are abundant at all three islands -- encounters at the turtle point off Gili Air are virtually guaranteed on any morning snorkel from shore. The shallow reefs around all three Gilis are accessible without a boat, making them exceptional for snorkellers of any level. For advanced divers, Belongas Bay on Lombok's southwest coast is one of Indonesia's most thrilling sites -- strong currents attract hammerhead sharks, oceanic whitetip sharks, and schools of mobula rays at the site known as "The Magnet". This is expert-only diving requiring experienced local guides. The waters around the Gilis also offer excellent macro diving, with nudibranchs, ghost pipefish, and mimic octopus regularly sighted. Visibility is generally 15-25 m during the dry season.

Kuta Lombok has the densest concentration of budget guesthouses -- clean double rooms from Rp 100,000-200,000 (around EUR 6-12) per night, with good cafes and surf rental shops nearby. Mataram, the island's capital and largest city, is the cheapest base of all: local warungs serve full meals for under Rp 30,000, and its central location makes day trips to Senggigi, the Gilis, and Senaru feasible by public bemo minibus. Getting around cheaply requires local bemos (shared minibuses) or rented scooters. DAMRI buses connect the airport to Mataram and Senggigi. The public boat from Bangsal to the Gilis (Rp 15,000-20,000) is the budget alternative to tourist speedboats. On the Gili Islands themselves, Gili Trawangan has the widest choice of budget bungalows despite its party reputation -- early booking and avoiding July-August cuts costs significantly. Gili Air is the quietest budget choice with smaller, cheaper guesthouses.

Tips for booking
- Rent a scooter in Kuta to unlock the south coast. The bays around Kuta are spread over 20 km of coast and public transport barely exists. A scooter (Rp 60,000-80,000 per day) lets you reach Selong Belanak, Mawun, Gerupuk, and Tanjung Aan in a morning. The roads are mostly sealed and quiet. Carry cash -- ATMs in Kuta can run dry on weekends.
- Book your Rinjani guide at least 2 weeks ahead in peak season. July and August see the crater rim crowded with trekkers; licensed operators fill up fast. Reputable agencies are based in Senaru and Sembalun -- avoid booking solely through Mataram city agents who add significant mark-up. The standard 2-night/3-day package includes guide, porters, meals, and camping gear. Porters are not optional -- they are required by the national park and their fees go directly to local communities.
- Take the fast boat from Senggigi directly to the Gilis rather than via Bangsal port. The Bangsal public boat terminal is 30-40 minutes north of Senggigi and involves negotiating with touts. Several operators run direct tourist speedboats from Senggigi Harbour to all three Gilis in 20-40 minutes -- smoother, safer, and far less stressful with children in tow.
- Watch the sunset from Gili Trawangan looking towards Bali and Rinjani simultaneously. From the west-facing beach on Gili Trawangan (or Gili Meno), you can watch the sun drop behind Bali's Agung volcano across the water while Rinjani turns pink behind you. Hire a cidomo for an evening beach ride -- the horse carts run at a romantic walking pace with no engine noise.
- Stay on Gili Trawangan for the widest dive school choice. GT has 15+ PADI-certified operators competing for business -- prices are competitive and quality is high. For snorkelling without crowds, take the short island-hopping boat between Gili Meno and Gili Air in the morning when the water is calmest. At low tide, the reef between Gili Air and Lombok mainland becomes a rich snorkelling flat just metres from shore.
- Indonesia offers visa on arrival for most nationalities -- buy it at the airport. The VOA costs USD 35 and allows a 30-day stay, extendable once for another 30 days at the immigration office in Mataram. Pay in USD or IDR cash at the dedicated VOA counter before reaching passport control. Lombok International Airport (LOP) is well connected to Bali, Jakarta, Surabaya, and several regional cities.
