Frequently asked questions
Do I need a car in Madeira?
A car is essential for exploring Madeira beyond Funchal. The island is extremely mountainous, roads are narrow and winding, and many of the best levadas, viewpoints and villages are only reachable by car. Public transport barely extends beyond the main roads.
What type of car should I rent in Madeira?
The smallest available car is strongly recommended. Roads are notoriously narrow with hairpin bends, tunnel sections, and sheer drops. Anything larger than a compact hatchback is much harder to manoeuvre on Madeiran mountain roads.
When should I book a rental car in Madeira?
Book at least 2 weeks ahead, especially for Easter and July-August. Madeira has a smaller rental fleet than larger islands and popular months fill quickly. Funchal airport can run short on vehicles in peak periods.
What insurance do I need in Madeira?
SCDW (Super CDW with zero excess) is strongly recommended. The combination of narrow roads, steep gradients, and frequent hairpin bends makes minor scrapes more likely. Full cover lets you focus on the spectacular scenery.
