Historic site
Aapravasi Ghat is a UNESCO World Heritage Site on the Port Louis waterfront, inscribed in 2006. The first British colonial immigration depot of its kind, it received indentured labourers from India and other parts of Asia and Africa under contract to work on the island’s sugar plantations. Between 1849 and 1923, approximately 500,000 Indian workers passed through the stone processing halls and landing steps, which are preserved as a memorial and can be visited at no charge in the heart of the capital.
