Oahu's public transport (TheBus) is extensive but slow -- it can take 90 minutes to reach the North Shore from Waikiki by bus. A rental car lets you drive the full Kamehameha Highway coastal loop, reach Hanauma Bay (timed entry required), chase waves at Pipeline and Sunset Beach, and explore the Windward Coast at your own pace. Parking is available at most beaches and trailheads. No inter-island ferries operate from Oahu -- inter-island travel is by air only.
