November-March — Phuket Old Town, Wat Chalong and the Big Buddha are most pleasant in cooler dry-season weather. Phi Phi and James Bond Bay tours run reliably.

- Southwest monsoon wet season (May-October): humid air from the Indian Ocean brings 190-310 mm of rain per month. September-October is the wettest, with 22-28 rainy days a month and frequent strong onshore winds.
- Northeast monsoon dry season (November-April): cooler, drier air from the Asian mainland. Rainfall drops to 35-135 mm/month; February averages just 8 rainy days. This is high tourism season.
- Sea condition flip: in dry season the Andaman Sea is glassy on Phuket's west coast (Patong, Kata, Karon) — peak yacht and dive season. In wet season, west-coast surf builds, the famous beaches close their loungers, and many island-hopping tours pause.
- East coast as bad-weather refuge: the east side of Phuket (Chalong, Rawai, Phuket Town) is sheltered from SW monsoon swells; small boats and Phi Phi day-tour piers stay operational.
- Tropical thunderstorms: short, intense afternoon downpours in shoulder seasons (April, October-November); mornings often clear.

The trade-off: rough west-coast surf, dangerous rip currents (heed red-flag warnings strictly), occasional boat-tour cancellations.
Is Phuket safe during monsoon?
Yes for most travel — but west-coast beach swimming requires care. Rip currents kill several swimmers each monsoon despite warnings. Boat tours pause when seas are rough. Avoid jet-skis and parasailing in red-flag conditions. Phang Nga Bay and the east coast remain safe.
Andaman vs Gulf of Thailand — which side has rain when?
Phuket and the Andaman side (Phi Phi, Koh Lanta) are wet May-October — SW monsoon brings rain off the Indian Ocean. Gulf side (Koh Samui, Koh Tao, Koh Chang) is wet October-December — completely different timing. If you want dry weather in October, choose the Gulf side; in December-February, both sides are dry.
