May, June and September are best — warm sea, comfortable air, the lush pine landscape at its best after winter rain. Skiathos is small, so the August crowds are noticeable; April and October are excellent for hiking and sightseeing.

Best for

Beach
June to early October — sea 22-25 °C, warmest in August. The famous Koukounaries pine-fringed beach is at its best June through September.
Hiking
April to early June and October to early November — pine-forested coastal trails, comfortable at 18-23 °C, fragrant and shaded; an unusual treat for a Greek island.
Sightseeing
April to June and September to October — Skiathos Town, Kastro ruins, Bourtzi promontory comfortable at 20-26 °C.

Climate notes

  • Wet Sporades climate: about 780 mm annual rainfall — wetter than the Cyclades, similar to mainland Greece.
  • Lush green pine forests: the abundant winter rain feeds dense Aleppo pine forests that cover most of the island, very different from the bare Aegean.
  • Hot dry summer (June-August): less than 30 mm rain per month, highs of 27-29 °C — slightly cooler than central Aegean thanks to forest cover and northerly latitude.
  • Wet autumn-winter (October-February): 100-140 mm rain per month, with intense storm events.
  • Mild meltemi influence: the Sporades catch a weakened version of the meltemi, far less intense than Mykonos or Naxos.
  • Fire risk (July-September): moderate to high in the dense pine forest; the island had a major fire in 1995 that destroyed about a third of the woodland.

Regional notes

  • Skiathos is small enough that climate is essentially uniform.
  • South coast (Skiathos Town, Koukounaries): the busiest tourist hub, sheltered from northerly winds, sandy bays.
  • North coast (Lalaria, Kastro): more exposed to wind and swell, dramatic rocky scenery, accessible by boat in summer.
  • Interior (the dense pine forest): noticeably cooler and shaded; popular for off-season hikes and August midday escape.

Frequently asked questions

When is the best time to visit Skiathos?
May, June and September offer warm sea (21-25 °C), comfortable air (22-28 °C), and lighter crowds than the July-August peak when northern European package tourism dominates.
Is Skiathos rainier than the Cyclades?
Yes — about 780 mm annual versus 280-330 mm in central Cyclades. Most rain falls October-March; summer is reliably dry. The high winter rainfall feeds the pine forests that distinguish the Sporades.
Can you swim in Skiathos in October?
Yes, in early October. Sea temperature averages 22-23 °C in the first half of October, dropping to 20 °C by month's end. Most beach restaurants close in mid-October.
How crowded does Skiathos get?
Very busy in July-August — the island is small with limited capacity, and direct flights from northern Europe fill it quickly. May, June and September feel notably less pressured.
Is the meltemi a factor on Skiathos?
A milder version. Sporades-area summer winds are northerly but less consistent than the central Cyclades meltemi. Most July-August days have mild breezes; sustained 40+ km/h days are rare.
Is Skiathos a good place for forest walks?
Yes — unique among Greek islands. The dense Aleppo pine forest covers most of the inland and provides shade for hot-day walks. The Kastro path on the north coast and the cross-island Skiathos-Koukounaries trail are popular.
What is the wettest month?
December, averaging about 130 mm and 12-14 rainy days. November is similar. Even in winter, dry days outnumber rainy days.
Does Skiathos close for winter?
Mostly. Beach hotels and restaurants close from late October to Easter. Skiathos Town has a year-round community of about 6,000 and stays alive through winter.
