Dunvegan Castle

Historic site

Dunvegan Castle stands on a rocky promontory above Loch Dunvegan, a sea loch on the northwest coast of Skye. It is the hereditary seat of the MacLeod of MacLeod, chief of Clan MacLeod, and has been in continuous occupation by the clan since at least the 13th century -- one of the longest continuously inhabited castles in Scotland. Originally a medieval fortification, the castle was enlarged and modified piecemeal over successive centuries before being remodelled in a romantic mock-medieval style during the 19th century.
