Best for
Beach
Year-round on the south coast (Costa Adeje, Los Cristianos): sea 19-24 °C, near-zero rain in July-August. The north's beaches are dramatic but cooler and breezier.
Hiking
October-May for the south and lower trails; June-September for Mt Teide (3,000 m+ trails are too snowy in winter). Anaga laurel forest is hikeable year-round.
Sightseeing
Year-round — Tenerife is the most reliable Spanish winter-sun destination, with January-February averages of 19-22 °C on the south coast.
Climate notes
- Subtropical 'eternal spring' climate: at sea level Tenerife averages 18 °C in winter and 24 °C in summer — a 6 °C annual swing, similar to Madeira and matched only in a few places worldwide.
- Mt Teide (3,718 m): Spain's highest peak — snow-capped December-March, accessible by cable car to 3,555 m, surrounded by a UNESCO national park.
- Sharp north-south split: the spine of the island intercepts trade-wind moisture, leaving Costa Adeje and the south sunny and dry while Puerto de la Cruz on the north stays cooler and cloudier.
- Steady trade winds (alisios): NE trades blow most days; El Médano on the SE coast is one of Europe's premier kitesurf and windsurf destinations.
- Calima events: Saharan dust haze, most common in spring and late summer — can spike temperatures past 35 °C and reduce visibility for 1-3 days.
- Year-round whale-watching: resident pilot whales and bottlenose dolphins live in the channel between Tenerife and La Gomera.

Regional notes
- Costa Adeje and Los Cristianos (south): warmest, driest, sunniest — the main resort belt and the obvious choice for beach holidays.
- Puerto de la Cruz (north): wetter and cooler — typically 2-3 °C below the south; lush gardens and Loro Parque; Atlantic surf at Playa Jardín.
- El Médano (SE coast): exposed to trade winds and known worldwide for kitesurfing and windsurfing; warmer and drier than Puerto de la Cruz.
- Santa Cruz de Tenerife (NE, capital): mild and breezier than Costa Adeje; transit hub with the famous February Carnival.
- Mt Teide and Las Cañadas (3,000 m+): 15-20 °C cooler than the coast — freezing nights December-March; sub-zero possible above 3,000 m.
- Anaga (NE peninsula): cool laurel forest, often misty even in summer; the wettest and greenest part of the island.
Frequently asked questions
When is the best time to visit Tenerife?
Tenerife works in any month. October-April is unbeatable for winter sun on the south coast (19-23 °C, almost no rain). June-September has the warmest sea and the only window for high-altitude Teide hiking. Even January-February averages 21 °C in Costa Adeje.
Can I climb Mt Teide?
Yes. The cable car runs year-round to 3,555 m (about 200 m below the summit). Walking the final summit cone requires a free permit booked online. Best months for the full walk are May-October; winter snow and ice often close the trail.
Why is the north coast cooler than the south?
The central spine intercepts NE trade-wind moisture, leaving Costa Adeje sunny and dry. Puerto de la Cruz catches more cloud and rain, with daytimes typically 2-3 °C cooler year-round. The temperature gap can reach 8-10 °C in summer.
Can you swim in Tenerife in winter?
Yes — sea temperature stays 19-20 °C December-March on the south coast. Sheltered bays at Costa Adeje and Los Cristianos are comfortable; the rougher north coast is brisker.
Does it snow in Tenerife?
Yes, on Mt Teide most winters. The volcano is regularly snow-capped December-March and the road can close for ice. The coast itself never sees snow.
What is calima?
A Saharan dust haze carried by easterly winds. Most common in spring and late summer, it can push daytime temperatures past 35 °C and drop visibility. Episodes typically last 1-3 days; flights at Tenerife South are rarely affected.
When is kitesurfing best at El Médano?
Year-round, with the strongest and most consistent trade winds June-September (15-25 knots almost daily). El Médano is one of Europe's top kitesurf venues thanks to flat sandy bays and reliable wind.
Are there fires on Tenerife?
July-September has elevated fire risk on the pine and forest slopes above 800 m. The 2023 fire was unusually large. Coastal resorts are rarely affected; check Cabildo alerts before hiking on red days.
Is Tenerife better than Lanzarote in winter?
Both are excellent. Lanzarote is drier and flatter — close to guaranteed sun. Tenerife has more topographic variety, the high mountains and lush north — but the north can be cloudy. For active winter holidays Tenerife wins; for pure beach reliability Lanzarote does.
