Car rental in Big Island

Big Island has almost no public transport -- Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, Kona's beaches, Waipio Valley, and the summit of Mauna Kea are all car-only destinations. The island is enormous (4,028 sq mi) and driving between Kona and Hilo takes 90 minutes. A rental car is essential for exploring the Chain of Craters Road, reaching black and green sand beaches, and driving the Saddle Road across the volcanic plateau. Uber and Lyft operate only in Kona and Hilo; most of the island has no rideshare coverage.
