Big Island weather & best time to visit

Year-round (sea 25-28 °C on Kona side; warmest August-October at 27-28 °C, coolest February-March at 25 °C). Dry season: May-September (Kona 50-80 mm/month, near-constant trade winds — Hilo still relatively wet). Wet season: November-March (Hilo 200-300 mm/month; Kona under 100 mm/month).

Best months to visit

JanuaryFebruaryMarchAprilSeptemberOctoberNovemberDecember

April-May and September-October give the best balance: warm dry Kona, drier Volcanoes National Park, no peak crowds. December-March suits whale watchers and snow-on-Mauna-Kea spotters but Hilo is at its wettest. Volcano viewing depends on eruption activity year-round — check NPS conditions.

Best for

Beach
April-October — Kona, Hapuna and Mauna Kea Beach on the leeward west have driest weather and warm calm sea (25-28 °C). Hilo side is wetter year-round but Onomea and Coconut Island still work between rain bursts.
Hiking
April-June and September-November — Volcanoes National Park, Pololu Valley and Pohoiho lava fields are coolest and driest. Mauna Kea/Mauna Loa summit hikes require careful weather windows year-round.
Sightseeing
Year-round on the Kona side; Hilo and Volcanoes National Park are best April-September when rain pauses are longer.

Climate notes

  • 11 of the world's 13 climate zones in one island: from tropical rainforest (Hilo, east) to subarctic alpine (Mauna Kea summit at 4207 m). The volcanic shape of the Big Island makes it the most climatically diverse place on Earth.
  • Wet windward east (Hilo) vs dry leeward west (Kona): the SE flank of Mauna Loa catches the trade winds and gives Hilo around 3000 mm of rain per year — one of the wettest cities in the United States. Kona on the leeward west gets under 700 mm.
  • Trade winds: dominate 70-90 % of the year; afternoon sea-breeze pattern at Kona produces clouds inland (the famous 'Kona coffee belt' weather).
  • Vog (volcanic smog): sulphur dioxide from Kilauea reacts with sunlight and moisture to form vog. Levels vary with eruption activity and trade-wind direction; Kona side most affected when trades fail.
  • Hurricane season (June-November, peak August-October): the Big Island has been brushed by named storms but direct major hits remain rare; Hilo's exposed harbour caught the worst of historic events.
  • Mauna Kea summit (4207 m) and Mauna Loa (4170 m): snow falls a few times most winters; summit roads close after major storms. Daytime summit temperature 0-10 °C year-round, nights well below freezing in winter.

Regional notes

  • Kona (west, leeward): the resort and tourism hub. Driest, sunniest, with afternoon sea-breeze convection clouds at the top of the coffee belt. Kona snorkelling is the calmest in Hawaii.
  • Hilo (east, windward): wettest city in the United States — 3000 mm a year, 280 rainy days. Lush rainforest, waterfalls, gardens. Mornings often bright; afternoon downpours routine.
  • Volcano Village (1200 m, near Volcanoes NP): cool (5-10 °C below the coast) and frequently misty/rainy. Bring a fleece even in summer.
  • Waikoloa and the Kohala coast (NW): driest part of the island — under 250 mm a year. Resort belt with reliable sun.
  • Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa summits (4000+ m): subarctic, snow possible any month. Summit road has restrictions; acclimatisation stop at 2800 m strongly advised.

Frequently asked questions

When is the best time to visit the Big Island?
April-May and September-October — Kona is reliably dry and warm, Hilo's rain pauses are longer, and Mauna Kea summit access is generally clear. December-March works well if you accept wetter Hilo and want a chance of snow on Mauna Kea.
What is vog and is it dangerous?
Vog is volcanic smog from Kilauea — sulphur dioxide reacting with sunlight and moisture. Levels depend on eruption activity and wind direction. Healthy adults rarely affected; people with asthma or respiratory conditions should monitor air quality reports (Hawaii DOH publishes daily updates) and consider Kohala or Hilo sides on heavy-vog days.
Why is the Big Island said to have 11 of 13 climate zones?
Its enormous elevation range (sea level to 4207 m) and the rain-shadow effect of the volcanoes produce tropical wet, tropical dry, semi-arid, Mediterranean, temperate, sub-alpine, alpine and even periglacial zones within a 200 km drive. Only true desert and arctic zones are missing.
Can I see active lava on the Big Island?
Sometimes — depends on Kilauea's current activity. When eruptions are happening within Halemaumau Crater, the glow is visible from designated overlooks at Volcanoes National Park, especially after dark. Check NPS and HVO advisories for current status before planning.
Is there snow on the Big Island?
Yes — Mauna Kea (4207 m) and Mauna Loa (4170 m) summits get snow several times most winters (December-March). The summit road is closed after storms; access requires a 4WD and careful altitude acclimatisation.
Why is Hilo so much wetter than Kona?
Hilo is on the windward NE side; trade winds rise against the volcanoes and dump moisture as rain. Kona is in the rain shadow on the leeward west. Hilo averages 3000 mm a year, Kona around 600 mm — a 5× difference within 100 km.
When can I see whales in the Big Island?
December to April, with peak January-March. The Kohala coast and Kealakekua Bay area are good viewing zones. Whales are less concentrated than around Maui's Auau Channel but still abundant.
What is the temperature at Mauna Kea summit?
Daytime 0-10 °C year-round, nights -5 to -10 °C in winter and 0-5 °C in summer. Wind chill can drop apparent temperature by 10-15 °C. Summit access at sunset/sunrise requires winter-grade clothing in any season.
Is the Big Island safe during hurricane season?
Generally yes — direct major hits remain rare. June-November is the formal season with peak August-October. The high mountains tend to weaken approaching storms, but Tropical Storm conditions on the eastern Hilo side are possible.
