The Tugboat Wreck in Caracas Bay rests at just 5 m depth -- the most accessible wreck dive in the Caribbean, completely encrusted with coral. The Blue Room (Blauw Kamer) is an underwater sea cave where light enters through an opening below the surface, creating a shimmering azure effect unlike anything else in the region. Playa Lagun's coral reef starts just 10 m from the shore. Klein Curacao, the uninhabited island 18 km offshore, has pristine reefs and is accessible by day boat. The reefs off Playa Kenepa and Cas Abou offer spectacular wall dives and abundant tropical fish. Curacao's waters are warm year-round (26-29 C) with no seasonal limitations. The Kura Hulanda Museum in Otrobanda offers a powerful and comprehensive account of the Atlantic slave trade and African diaspora. The Mikvé Israel-Emanuel Synagogue (1732) is the oldest synagogue in continuous use in the Western Hemisphere, testifying to Curacao's historic role as a refuge for Sephardic Jews expelled from Spain and Portugal. The island has over 80 landhuizen (colonial plantation houses), some now converted into restaurants and hotels. Cas Abou is the most popular organised beach with full facilities and excellent snorkeling directly off the sand. Playa Lagun is a small sheltered cove famous for underwater diversity -- sea turtles, seahorses and colourful reef fish are regular sightings from the shore. For day-trippers, Klein Curacao (reached by boat) offers completely undeveloped white sand and the most pristine snorkeling. Restored colonial mansions have been transformed into rooftop bars, restaurants and nightclubs in a walkable strip just east of the historic Punda waterfront. The neighbourhood has an increasingly international and creative reputation, with excellent rum bars, craft cocktail venues and restaurants serving both local Antillean cuisine and international food. The Willemstad Carnival (January to February) is one of the largest and most colourful in the Caribbean -- a two-week celebration with parades, music and street parties. For couples seeking romance, Handelskade at sunset is extraordinarily photogenic. Willemstad's restaurant scene along the waterfront and in Pietermaai offers the best dining on the island, with fresh Caribbean seafood a speciality.
