Preguntas frecuentes
Do I need a car in Koh Samui?
For exploring Koh Samui beyond the main resort strips, a rental car or motorbike is very useful. Taxis and songthaew (shared trucks) cover the ring road, but the interior jungle roads, quiet north coast beaches like Mae Nam and Bang Por, and the temple routes are much easier with your own vehicle. The island is 247 sq km and easily driven in a day.
Is it safe to rent a motorbike in Koh Samui?
Motorbike rental is the most popular option for independent travellers (around THB 200-300/day), but exercise caution. Roads can be steep, narrow, and slippery in the rainy season. Wear a helmet, go slowly on mountain switchbacks, and check the bike thoroughly before accepting it. A car is safer for families and those less experienced with two-wheel vehicles.
When should I book a car in Koh Samui?
December to February is peak season -- book at least 2 weeks ahead. July and August also see strong demand. For shoulder season (May-June, September-November), booking a few days ahead is usually sufficient. Cars at Samui Airport (USM) are convenient but typically 20-30% more expensive than town agencies.
Where can I rent a car in Koh Samui?
Rental agencies operate at Samui International Airport (USM), along the main beach roads in Chaweng and Lamai, and in Nathon town. Bangkok Airways (the airport operator) has a partnership with Avis. Independent local agencies in Chaweng tend to have the most competitive rates for longer rentals.
