The south coast strip from Skiathos Town southward to Koukounaries is one long sandy beach interrupted only by the small headlands and villages of Megali Amos and Troulos. Most accommodation is concentrated along this stretch. The beaches are wide, sandy and relatively sheltered. Sunsets along the south coast are spectacular, with the Pelion mainland providing a dramatic backdrop.

The old Venetian port area provides a romantic backdrop for evening strolls. The town has the island's main supermarket, shops, pharmacies and services. Ferries to Skopelos, Alonissos and Volos depart from the old port, making day trips to neighbouring islands straightforward. The Papadiamantis Museum (dedicated to the island's most famous writer) and the Evangelistria Monastery (7km uphill) are accessible day trips. Skiathos is very small and manageable -- taxis are inexpensive (any destination within 15 minutes), bus service is regular along the south coast, and facilities (pharmacies, supermarkets, medical care) are readily available. Self-catering apartments with kitchens are plentiful and represent good value for families. The calm south coast villages (Troulos, Agia Paraskevi) offer quieter bases with easier access to beaches than the busy Town.

The Papadiamantis Museum honours Alexandros Papadiamantis, one of Greece's greatest writers and the island's most famous son. The Evangelistria Monastery (7km uphill, 45-minute walk or taxi ride) dates from the 16th century and commands views across the Sporades. The old port area retains Venetian-era architecture. Nearby Skopelos and Alonissos islands are accessible by day ferry and have additional Byzantine monasteries and historical sites. The island itself has limited ancient ruins, but the Bourtzi islet in the harbour was a Venetian fortress. Mount Pelion on the nearby mainland has a string of mountain villages with Byzantine heritage, accessible by day trips. Exploring the inland villages and uphill hiking trails reveals abandoned Byzantine chapels and stone terraces.
