Maaya Thila in Ari Atoll is rated by many professional divers as the best dive site in the Maldives, with whitetip reef sharks, eagle rays and extraordinary night dives. Fuvahmulah in the south is the only place in the world for tiger shark and thresher shark dives from a local island. Snorkelers can have exceptional experiences even without diving certification. Hanifaru Bay is the world's most reliable location for mass manta aggregations -- from June to November, sometimes over 200 manta rays gather in a single lagoon to feed on zooplankton, creating one of the ocean's most extraordinary spectacles. Access is strictly managed: snorkeling only (no diving), controlled entry numbers and reef-safe sunscreen rules. The concentration peaks in August during the strongest phytoplankton blooms. South Ari Atoll Marine Protected Area holds a year-round resident population of whale sharks, attracted by the nutrient upwellings along the atoll's edge. Encounters are almost guaranteed on any day of the year, with up to a dozen whale sharks regularly visible in a single morning. The bioluminescent beach at Vaadhoo Island in Raa Atoll is a separate phenomenon -- phytoplankton that glows electric blue at night, best visible on the darkest moonless nights. Addu Atoll in the far south has freshwater lakes, endemic bird species and exceptional biodiversity unusual in the Maldives.

Maafushi Island is the most developed, with dozens of guesthouses, multiple dive operators, watersports rental and a designated bikini beach. It is 45 minutes by speedboat from the airport and offers the full Maldivian reef experience -- turtles, sharks and rays are visible on the house reef -- at a tiny fraction of resort prices. Thulusdhoo Island adds surfing to the equation -- Cokes, one of the Maldives' best surf breaks, is right in front of the local guesthouses. Rasdhoo Island in Ari Atoll is the best budget base for serious diving, including hammerhead shark dives at dawn on the nearby Rasdhoo Atoll wall. Addu Atoll is reached by domestic flight and offers very affordable local accommodation, excellent wreck diving on HMS Loyalty and a unique experience of connected islands linked by a causeway road -- unique in the Maldives.

- Tip Book overwater villas 3-6 months ahead for December-April. The top Maldivian properties sell out early for Christmas, New Year and the northern European school holiday windows. Shoulder season (May-June, October-November) offers the same resorts at 20-40% lower rates with less crowded reefs. The wet season is not as limiting as it sounds -- rain falls in short afternoon bursts and mornings are often clear.
- Tip Stay in South Ari Atoll or Ari Atoll for diving. The Maaya Thila area in Ari Atoll (reached by seaplane from the airport) offers the highest concentration of world-class dive sites. Many resorts here have large PADI-certified dive centres with morning two-tank dives and dedicated night dive programs. Fuvahmulah is a local island stay -- stay at a guesthouse, dive with local operators, and you will spend less in a week than one night at a North Male luxury resort.
- Tip Combine Baa Atoll and South Ari Atoll on a single trip. Many visitors reach Baa Atoll by seaplane for the mantas, then transfer to South Ari for whale sharks on their way back. Both atolls are within a seaplane transfer of the airport. August is the single best month in the Maldives for wildlife -- Hanifaru Bay mantas are at peak density, whale sharks are abundant, and the wet season means fewer tourists overall.
- Tip Take the public ferry from Male to Maafushi (USD 2-3) instead of the speedboat (USD 25-30). The public ferry runs twice daily and takes about 2 hours -- slower but dramatically cheaper. Most local island guesthouses will arrange airport pickup by speedboat for an extra fee. The bikini beach rules on local islands mean you can only wear swimwear on the designated beach area -- cover up in the village. Most guesthouses provide free snorkel gear and can arrange dive packages.
