- The 'Garden Isle': Mt Waialeale (1569 m) is one of the wettest places on Earth — over 11 m of rain a year at the summit. The whole island is greener and lusher than the rest of Hawaii.
- Wet windward north and east (Hanalei, Princeville, Lihue): 150-180 mm per month even in summer; winters can exceed 250 mm.
- Drier leeward south (Poipu): 60-90 mm per month, with reliable sun much of the year — about half the rain of Lihue.
- Trade winds: dominate, but the small island is more easily flipped into Kona conditions than the larger Hawaiian islands.
- Hurricane history: Iniki (1992) and Iwa (1982) made direct hits as major hurricanes — Kauai is the most exposed Hawaiian island to direct strikes when storms reach the chain. Hurricane season June-November, peak August-October.
- North Shore winter swell (October-April): Hanalei Bay and the Na Pali coast see large North Pacific swells; Hanalei Bay's protected crescent stays accessible most days, but Na Pali boat tours pause in winter.

Is Kauai really the wettest island in Hawaii?
Yes — Mt Waialeale (1569 m) records over 11 m of rainfall a year, among the highest on Earth. Lihue averages around 1100 mm. The leeward Poipu side is much drier (about 700 mm), comparable to other Hawaiian leeward zones.

Why is Kauai so much greener than the other Hawaiian islands?
The combined effect of being the oldest and most-eroded island, with the highest single peak (Waialeale) generating extreme orographic rainfall over the centre. Both windward and parts of the leeward side get more rain than equivalent zones on Maui or Oahu.
