Where to stay in Koh Lanta

Koh Lanta is one of Thailand's most rewarding beach destinations: long enough to offer real variety, small enough to feel unhurried. The island's 27 km west coast hosts a succession of beaches, from the busy northern resort strip at Long Beach to the sheltered horseshoe bay of Ao Kantiang in the south. Accommodation ranges from budget bungalows and dive-school guesthouses to hillside infinity-pool villas. All arrivals come by ferry from Krabi (45 min), Ko Phi Phi (45 min) or Ko Lipe (3–4 h) — there is no airport on the island.

Where to look

Beach & Resort

Hat Khlong Dao (Long Beach) is Koh Lanta's most developed and accessible beach, lined with hotels ranging from budget bungalows to mid-range international resorts. The beach is wide, calm and family-friendly, with watersports, beach bars and restaurants within easy walking distance. It is the best choice for first-time visitors wanting a classic Andaman beach holiday close to all amenities.

Quiet & Boutique

Klong Nin and Ao Kantiang in the south of the island are favoured by travellers seeking smaller, more personal properties. Klong Nin has a handful of boutique guesthouses and restaurants with a more bohemian, low-key feel. Ao Kantiang is the showpiece southern bay, sheltered by forested hills, with several notable boutique resorts tucked into the hillside above the beach. This is the base for liveaboard and day-trip diving operators.

Wellness & Retreat

Koh Lanta has a strong wellness culture, with yoga studios, meditation retreats and detox programmes spread along the central and southern coast. Klong Khong beach in the middle of the island is the classic backpacker and long-stay area, with hammock bars and reggae cafes. Klong Nin has several eco-conscious guesthouses offering yoga packages. The hill interior near the Khao Mai Kaew cave is very quiet.

Culture & Heritage

Lanta Old Town (Ban Ko Lanta) on the southeast coast is a unique destination — a row of Chinese-Muslim stilted wooden houses over the water, with art galleries, boutique shops and excellent southern Thai seafood restaurants. Staying in or near the Old Town gives a completely different experience from the west coast resorts. It is best suited to independent travellers interested in local life and Chao Leh sea nomad culture.
