December to February is the classic Lanta window — dry, calm, sunny, full beach operations. November and March are excellent shoulder months. April is hot and humid. May-October is wet and many resorts close completely; the few that stay open offer half-price rates but with daily storms and rough surf. Resorts typically reopen in November.

November-March — Long Beach, Klong Nin and Kantiang Bay are calm, clear and warm (sea 29-31 °C). Full beach service, jet-ski, snorkelling. Many resorts run high-season rates over Christmas/New Year and Chinese New Year.
Hiking
December-February — Mu Ko Lanta National Park trails (Mai Kaeo Cave, viewpoints) are coolest and driest. Bring water — even January midday is hot.
Sightseeing
November-March — temple visits (Wat Khlong Thom), Koh Rok / Koh Haa snorkelling day trips and Old Town walks at their reliable best.
Climate notes
- Southwest monsoon wet season (May-October): humid Indian Ocean air brings 215-355 mm of rain per month. September-October is the wettest with 24-27 rainy days; many beach resorts close from May/June and reopen in October-November.
- Northeast monsoon dry season (November-April): drier air from the Asian mainland; rainfall drops to 30-145 mm/month. January-February averages just 7-8 rainy days. This is high tourism season.
- West-coast surf in monsoon: big swells from the SW make Long Beach (Phra Ae) and Klong Khong unsafe for swimming May-October; rip currents are dangerous and red flags are common.
- Dry-season calm: from November to April the Andaman is glassy on Lanta's west coast, with crystal sea (visibility 20-30 m) and full beach service.
- Tropical thunderstorms: short, intense afternoon downpours in shoulder seasons (April, October-November); mornings often clear, even at the start of the wet season.
- Cyclone-free direct: at 7-8°N Lanta sits below typical cyclone tracks; tropical depressions occasionally cross from the Bay of Bengal but direct cyclone hits are rare.

Are Koh Lanta hotels open year-round?
About half close during the wet season (May/June through October/November) for renovations and staff rest. Saladan (the main town) and the east-side accommodations stay open year-round; most west-coast beach resorts shut down. Check directly with your booking platform for the exact reopening date.
Can I swim at Long Beach in July?
Generally no — rip currents are dangerous and red flags are common. Several drownings each monsoon despite warnings. Confine swimming to the calm side of headlands or to hotel pools. The east coast (Saladan area) is calmer.
Andaman vs Gulf of Thailand — when does Koh Lanta have rain?
Koh Lanta is on the Andaman side: wet May-October, dry November-April. Gulf islands (Koh Samui, Koh Tao) have opposite timing — wet October-December. If you want sun in October, choose the Gulf side; in December-February, both sides are dry.
Is Koh Lanta crowded in dry season?
Less so than Phuket or Phi Phi. Lanta has more of a quiet-beach feel, with families and longer-stay travellers. Christmas/New Year is the peak crowd period; early December and early March are noticeably calmer with the same weather.

November-April. Koh Rok and Koh Haa are exposed offshore reefs and tour operations stop entirely in monsoon weather. Visibility in dry season is often 25-30 m; turtle and reef-shark sightings are common.
