Party travellers — Solo adventurers — Young groups — Beach bar fans Ton Sai village is Southeast Asia's liveliest pedestrian beach party destination. Fire shows on Loh Dalum Bay beach begin around 21:00 every night; bucket bars serve cheap rum-and-mixer drinks; the lanes are lined with bars until 03:00. Staying in the guesthouse lanes of Ton Sai puts you 2 minutes from the pier, 5 minutes from the beach, and in the heart of the action. Book rooms with A/C if you're staying for more than one night — fan rooms facing the lanes can be quite warm. Earplugs are useful if you plan to sleep before midnight.

Divers — Snorkellers — Open Water students — Advanced divers Every PADI dive centre on Phi Phi is located in Ton Sai village, within 5 minutes' walk of all accommodation in the village area. Staying in Ton Sai gives the most convenient access to dive briefings, gear pickup, and early-morning boat departures. Key sites — Bida Nok, Bida Nai, Maya Bay reef — are 30–60 minutes by dive boat. The King Cruiser Wreck and Hin Daeng require full-day dive trips departing from Ton Sai pier. PADI Open Water courses run 3–4 days and can be fully completed on the island.
Beach & Nature Seekers
Beach lovers — Nature walkers — Sunrise chasers — Snorkellers Long Beach (Hat Yao) on the southeast coast of Phi Phi Don offers a quieter alternative to the Ton Sai crowd. Small resorts and bungalows sit directly on the sand; the reef just offshore is excellent for snorkelling without a boat. Access is by longtail boat from Ton Sai pier (10 min, shared or chartered) or on foot via a 25-minute jungle path over the hill. The beach is calm and rarely crowded — day-trippers rarely make it this far. Sunrise over the water is spectacular here. Bring supplies as dining options are limited to a few small restaurants.
Romantic Couples & Honeymooners
Couples — Honeymooners — Anniversaries — Romantic escapes Laem Thong Beach on the remote northeastern tip of Phi Phi Don is the most romantic and secluded spot on the island. A small number of upscale resorts occupy a stretch of white sand beach rarely reached by day-trippers. The Moken (sea gypsy) village at one end adds a unique cultural dimension. Access is by longtail from Ton Sai pier (20 min) or by resort speedboat. Staying here means paying more but experiencing a near-private beach, exceptional snorkelling directly from the shore, and total silence after dark — a world away from the Ton Sai party scene.
Budget Backpackers
Backpackers — Students — Solo travellers — Long-stay budget seekers The guesthouse lanes of Ton Sai village offer the cheapest accommodation on the island. Fan rooms with shared bathroom start from THB 300–500 per night in low season; air-conditioned rooms with en-suite from THB 700–1,200. Everything is 5–10 minutes from the pier, beach, dive shops, and restaurants. Staff at guesthouses often meet arriving boats at the pier — look for people holding signs as you step off. The local market behind the pier sells cheap Thai breakfasts from 07:00. Budget street food (pad thai, rice dishes, fruit) is widely available in the village lanes for THB 60–120 per dish.
Families with Children
Families — Young children — Parents wanting calm water — First-time island visitors Koh Phi Phi is a challenging destination for families with very young children — there is no vehicle access, the Ton Sai party scene runs late, and heavy crowds in peak season can be overwhelming with strollers or toddlers. Families who do visit do best by staying on Long Beach or Laem Thong — both have calm clear water, more space, and far less noise at night. The Loh Dalum Bay end of Ton Sai has the calmest, shallowest water for children to swim. Peak season (Dec–Mar) is far more crowded — if visiting with children, aim for April–May or late October for smaller crowds and still-good weather.

Tips for booking
- The fire show area on Loh Dalum fills by 20:30 on busy nights. Walk from Ton Sai to the Loh Dalum end of the beach (5 min) and position yourself before it starts. The light show, music, and fire rope skipping is free to watch from the sand.
- Book your dive course or fun dives at least 2 days ahead in peak season (Dec–Mar). Places fill quickly and morning departure times are shared between multiple boats. Arrive with your dive certification card or download a digital version — shops will ask for it.
- The 25-minute walk over the hill from Ton Sai to Long Beach is a rewarding route through forest with viewpoint glimpses. Start at 06:00 to catch the sunrise from the beach. The path involves some rocky sections — wear shoes, not flip-flops.
- Ask your resort about a private longtail for a sunrise trip to Maya Bay. Departing at 06:00 from Laem Thong, you arrive at Maya Bay when it is nearly empty. The contrast between dawn silence and the midday crowds is extraordinary. Most Laem Thong resorts can arrange this at additional cost.
- Ask to see the room before paying for multiple nights. Fan rooms vary significantly in quality — ventilation, bed condition, and bathroom cleanliness can differ even within the same guesthouse. In peak season, book at least 2–3 days ahead via Booking.com or Hostelworld. Walk-in availability in December and January is very limited.
- Book a resort on Long Beach or Laem Thong rather than a Ton Sai guesthouse if travelling with children. The 100–200 m buffer from the village lanes makes a significant difference to sleep quality. Longtail shuttles between Long Beach and Ton Sai pier run throughout the day.
