Frequently asked questions
Are there cars on Koh Phi Phi?
No -- Koh Phi Phi has no roads. The only transport is on foot, by longtail boat between bays, and by handcart for cargo. Visitors arrive by ferry from Phuket, Krabi or Koh Lanta and walk everywhere on the island itself.
How do I get to Koh Phi Phi from Phuket?
Ferries run from Phuket's Rassada Pier to Tonsai Bay on Phi Phi Don. The crossing takes about 2 hours; high-speed catamarans are faster (1h 30m). Multiple operators offer 2-3 daily departures in high season.
How do I get to Koh Phi Phi from Krabi?
Ferries run from Krabi Klong Jilad Pier to Tonsai Bay -- about 1h 30m to 2h depending on the boat. Service is 2-3 times daily in season. Many travellers combine Krabi and Phi Phi as a single trip.
Should I rent a car at Phuket or Krabi?
Either works. Phuket Airport (HKT) has more flight options and rental fleet; Krabi Airport (KBV) is closer to the ferry pier. If you plan to combine Phi Phi with Railay and the Krabi mainland, fly into Krabi. For Phi Phi plus Phuket beaches, fly into Phuket.
Where do I park while visiting Phi Phi?
Both Rassada Pier (Phuket) and Klong Jilad Pier (Krabi) have paid long-term parking lots, charging around 100-200 THB per day. Hotels in Phuket Old Town and Ao Nang sometimes offer to keep your car while you visit Phi Phi for a small fee.
How do I get around Phi Phi once I arrive?
Walking is the main mode of transport in Tonsai Village. Longtail boats shuttle between Tonsai, Loh Dalum, Long Beach and the more remote bays for 100-300 THB per ride. Boat trips to Maya Bay on Phi Phi Leh are sold from any hotel or pier kiosk.
Can I do Koh Phi Phi as a day trip?
Yes -- many tour operators in Phuket and Krabi offer day trips that include the ferry, lunch and a snorkel stop at Maya Bay or Bamboo Island. To experience Phi Phi's evening atmosphere, an overnight stay is much better.
Is there a fee to enter Maya Bay?
Yes -- Maya Bay is part of Hat Noppharat Thara National Park, and there is a national park entry fee of around 400 THB for foreign adults. The fee is usually included in tour boat tickets but check before booking. The bay reopened in 2022 with visitor caps.
What's the best time of year for Phi Phi?
November to April has the best weather -- dry, calm seas and reliable ferry service. May to October is wetter with rougher seas; some ferries are cancelled in monsoon storms but the island remains accessible.
Can I rent a scooter on Koh Phi Phi?
No -- scooters are not used on Phi Phi because there are no roads. If you want a scooter for the surrounding area (Krabi, Ao Nang, Phuket), rent one from a dealer near your hotel before crossing. Always wear a helmet.
