Porto Katsiki is the most famous beach in the Ionian Islands — a crescent of white sand at the base of sheer chalk-white cliffs soaring 100 metres above the sea, with water of an extraordinary electric-blue colour visible from the clifftop viewpoint above. It is accessible by steps from the clifftop car park, or by boat from Nidri or Vassiliki. The beach is entirely natural with no permanent development. Egremni, a few kilometres north, is arguably even more spectacular and certainly less visited. It stretches for almost two kilometres at the foot of the same dramatic white cliffs. The 2015 earthquake damaged the access staircase and a section remains challenging, but the beach rewards those who make the effort. For calmer, more accessible swimming, Agios Nikitas on the northwest coast is a charming village beach with good facilities. Kathisma Beach, reached by a winding road, is a long sandy bay that is popular but never overcrowded.

The sheltered bay is protected from the prevailing winds by the surrounding hills and the nearby Ionian islets, creating reliably calm, warm water that is ideal for children of all ages. The resort has a full range of facilities — supermarkets, pharmacies, restaurants and watersports centres — along a pleasant seafront promenade. Pedalos, kayaks and boat hire are all available from the waterfront. The daily boat excursions from Nidri to the surrounding islands are a highlight for families. Meganisi, Skorpios (the former Onassis island) and Madouri islet are all reachable within 20 minutes by boat, with calm snorkelling coves and beaches on each. Lygia and Nikiana, quieter resorts a few kilometres north of Nidri, are good alternatives with calmer, less commercial atmospheres and equally sheltered east-coast water.

The bay's geography is uniquely favourable: each afternoon from June through September, a strong thermal wind funnels down from the surrounding mountains, building reliably from around noon and providing ideal conditions for both beginners and experienced windsurfers. The calm morning conditions are used by learners; the afternoon thermal suits intermediate and advanced riders. Several well-established windsurfing schools, including Club Vassiliki (one of the oldest in Greece), operate on the beach. Agios Ioannis beach near Lefkada Town is the main kitesurfing spot — the lagoon behind the beach provides ideal conditions with a consistent cross-shore wind. For sailing, Lefkada is one of the best bases in the Ionian — the island's sheltered east coast and the surrounding island group create superb cruising grounds accessible to both experienced sailors and beginners on skippered charters. Sea kayaking along the west coast cliffs is an outstanding half-day activity.

Because the island sits on a seismic fault and has suffered repeated earthquakes, the locals developed a unique building tradition: upper storeys of houses are built in painted corrugated metal or timber-framed construction rather than stone, creating a colourful streetscape unlike anywhere else in Greece. The Old Town behind the seafront has winding lanes, a covered market, traditional kafeneia and genuine local life. The imposing Santa Maura castle guards the entrance to the lagoon. The interior mountain villages — Karya, Englouvi, Vafkeri, Exantheia — are largely untouched by tourism and offer a window into traditional Lefkadian life. Karya is famous for its embroidery tradition, now practiced by fewer artisans but still represented in the village square. Englouvi, one of the highest villages in the Ionian Islands, produces a distinctive local lentil variety unique to the area. The village festivals (panegyria) in August are a genuine and joyful experience for visitors who find themselves at one.

Agios Nikitas village, a short drive from the viewpoint, is a beautifully preserved small village with whitewashed houses, bougainvillea-draped lanes and a handful of excellent tavernas right on the water. Staying here combines easy access to the west coast scenery with genuine village charm. The islet of Meganisi, just a 20-minute boat ride from Nidri, is a step into a different Ionian world — quiet harbours, transparent water, and only a handful of small hotels and guesthouses. Spartochori village on Meganisi has some of the best sea views in the entire Ionian Sea. For those who want luxurious privacy, private villa rentals in the hills around Nidri or above the east coast offer infinity pools and panoramic sea views over the island group at prices significantly below comparable properties in Mykonos or Santorini.

The interior rises to over 1100 metres at Mount Stavrotas, the highest peak in the Ionian Islands, covered in dense forests of fir, oak and Aleppo pine. The mountain villages are connected by old mule tracks and footpaths that make excellent walking routes away from the summer heat of the coast. The trail from Karya to the summit and back is one of the finest walks in the Ionians with exceptional views in all directions. The lagoon on the northern tip of the island — a shallow brackish lake separated from the sea — is an important habitat for waterbirds and flamingos. The wetland around Lefkada Town's eastern waterfront is a productive birdwatching site during spring and autumn migration. Olive and cypress groves cover much of the island's gentler slopes, and the road network through the interior reaches village after village where olive oil, thyme honey and local wine are produced and sold directly by farmers.

As the island capital, it has the widest range of accommodation at all price points, the cheapest supermarkets and local markets, and easy access by local bus to the main beaches. The town's lagoon-side waterfront has free public beaches. Agios Ioannis beach, a 15-minute walk from the town centre, is a wide sandy beach with no entry charge and excellent conditions for swimming and kitesurfing. Lefkada has a significant advantage for budget travellers: it is connected to mainland Greece by a bridge, eliminating ferry costs entirely. Driving from Athens takes about 4.5 hours, and the island is accessible by intercity bus from Athens and Thessaloniki. This makes it one of the most cost-effective island destinations in Greece. Vassiliki in the south is cheaper than Nidri for accommodation despite its world-class windsurfing. The shoulder months of May and October offer substantially lower prices with excellent weather.

Tips for booking
- Visit Porto Katsiki by boat from Nidri for the full experience. The clifftop view is sensational but the boat approach reveals the cliffs and water colour from the best angle. Day-trip boat tours from Nidri harbour visit Porto Katsiki along with nearby coves and islets. In peak season, the clifftop car park can be extremely busy — arrive before 9am or after 5pm if driving.
- Nidri's harbour is the best base for boat excursions. Day trips to Meganisi, Skorpios, Kastos and the sea caves at Porto Katsiki depart every morning from the main jetty. The full-day tour visiting multiple islands and swimming stops is one of the most enjoyable ways to see the Lefkada coast with children.
- Book windsurfing instruction in advance for July and August. The best schools in Vassiliki fill their beginner slots weeks ahead. Club Vassiliki is the most established operation and caters for all levels. The afternoon thermal typically begins around 1pm and peaks at 3-4pm — plan your sessions accordingly.
- Spend an evening in Lefkada Town's Old Town. The lanes behind the main street — particularly around the church squares — fill with locals from 9pm onwards. The kafeneia serving tsipouro (a local grape spirit) with small plates of mezedes are the real social heart of the island. This is not a tourist experience — it is how the island actually lives.
- Agios Nikitas is the most romantic village on the island. The cobbled lanes, the sea-facing tavernas and the small beach at the end of the village combine perfectly for a couple's stay. It is small enough to feel intimate but has good enough restaurants to eat differently every night. Book accommodation at least 2 months ahead for July and August.
- The interior mountain villages are best explored in the cooler morning hours. In July and August, coastal temperatures can exceed 35 degrees — the mountain villages above 600 metres are consistently 6-8 degrees cooler. The drive from Lefkada Town to Karya through the olive groves takes 30 minutes and is one of the most pleasant drives on the island.
- Lefkada is the only Greek island you can reach without a ferry. The causeway bridge means you can drive or take a bus directly from mainland Greece. From Athens, the KTEL bus service runs to Lefkada Town several times daily for a fraction of island airfare costs. This makes it one of the most accessible and affordable island options for budget travellers.
