Lefkada weather & best time to visit

June to November (sea above 20 °C; warmest in August at 25 °C).

Best months to visit

AprilMayOctober

May, June and September are best: warm sea, comfortable air, the spectacular west-coast beaches at their best. Connected to the mainland by a short bridge, Lefkada is unusually accessible — an advantage outside the August peak when the bridge bottleneck queues form.

Best for

Beach
June to October — sea 22-26 °C, warmest in August. The famous Porto Katsiki and Egremni white-sand beaches are at their photogenic best in calm weather; west-coast surf can make swimming bracing.
Hiking
April to early June and October to early November — Karya and the central villages comfortable at 18-23 °C.
Sightseeing
April to June and September to October — Lefkada Town, Nydri, the Onassis-era Skorpios island view at 20-26 °C.

Climate notes

  • Wet Ionian climate: about 990 mm annual rainfall, slightly more than Kefalonia.
  • Hot dry summer (June-September): less than 20 mm rain per month, highs of 28-31 °C, comfortable sea breeze on the west coast.
  • Strong west-coast winds: the dramatic vertical cliffs of the west catch consistent NW winds, making Lefkada's beaches popular with windsurfers and kitesurfers (Vassiliki, Mylos).
  • Long swimming season: sea temperature stays above 20 °C from June through November.
  • Wet autumn-winter (October-February): 130-180 mm rain per month, with intense storms typical of the Ionian.
  • Fire risk (July-September): moderate; the island's pine and olive groves catch fire occasionally but no major events in recent years.

Frequently asked questions

When is the best time to visit Lefkada?
May, June, September and early October — warm sea (21-25 °C), comfortable air, the photogenic west-coast beaches at their best, and lighter crowds than the August peak.
Is Lefkada good for windsurfing?
Yes — Vassiliki bay on the south coast is one of Europe's top windsurfing destinations, with reliable 15-25 knot thermal winds most June-September afternoons. Mylos beach is also popular.
Can you swim at Porto Katsiki year-round?
Most of the season — June through October is comfortable. The cliff-side stairs and lack of facilities make winter visits a sightseeing-only proposition.
Is Lefkada cooler than the Aegean in summer?
Slightly hotter on average. Despite the moisture, Ionian summer highs reach 30-32 °C, similar to or above the Cyclades.
How rainy is Lefkada?
Annual rainfall about 990 mm, similar to Kefalonia. Summer is reliably dry — July averages 1-2 rainy days. Most rain falls October-March.
Is the bridge to the mainland always open?
The floating bridge opens hourly to let boats pass; closures last just a few minutes. In bad weather (rare in summer), the bridge may close longer. There is no other road access.
Is the meltemi a factor on Lefkada?
No — the meltemi is an Aegean wind. Lefkada's winds are local thermal patterns: the Vassiliki valley funnels strong NW thermals on summer afternoons; the east coast is calm.
Does it snow on Lefkada?
Very rarely. The interior peaks (Stavrota, 1158 m) get occasional dustings in January-February. The coast practically never sees snow.
