Maui has virtually no public transport -- the Road to Hana, Haleakala summit and most beaches are only reachable by car. A rental car is essential for exploring the island's 120-mile coastline, driving the switchback Hana Highway past waterfalls and black-sand beaches, and reaching Haleakala National Park before sunrise. Uber and Lyft operate in resort areas but are expensive and scarce outside Kaanapali and Wailea. No inter-island ferries serve Maui -- island-hopping is by plane only.
