- Wet windward east vs dry leeward west: East Molokai has the second-tallest sea cliffs in the world (Kalaupapa) and lush windward valleys; West Molokai is one of the driest parts of Hawaii, with rainfall under 250 mm a year on the coast.
- Trade-wind dominance: NE trades blow most of the year; Kaunakakai and the south central coast are sheltered, with the wettest weather in the Halawa Valley on the far east.
- Wet winter (November-March): Halawa and the windward east see 200-400 mm/month; Kaunakakai stays modest at 35-65 mm.
- Dry summer (May-September): Kaunakakai drops to under 15 mm/month — semi-arid feel, with golden grass slopes inland.
- Hurricane season (June-November, peak August-October): historically rare direct hits; storms brushing past tend to amplify trade winds rather than deliver major rain.
- Cool nights: away from the coast, Molokai's high east (above 600 m, Kalaupapa rim) and the central spine drop to 14-17 °C even in summer.

Is Molokai dry or wet?

When can I see whales from Molokai?

Is Molokai's weather like the other Hawaiian islands?
Same trade-wind pattern but more extreme microclimate contrasts because of the very tall east mountains. The west is drier than equivalent zones on Oahu or Maui; the east is wetter.
Can I swim at Papohaku Beach?
Caution recommended. Papohaku is beautiful but exposed to ocean currents — there is no reef shelter, no lifeguards, and rip currents are common in winter swell (October-April). Locals consider it a viewing beach more than a swimming beach. Hotel Molokai's south-coast beach is the safest swim option.
Does Molokai have a hurricane risk?
June-November is the formal season; direct major hits are historically rare. Storms passing through the chain can amplify trade winds, occasionally causing road closures along the windward east.
