Sun worshippers — Beach bar fans — Couples — Weekend breakers Long Beach (Bai Truong) is Phu Quoc's most famous stretch -- 20 km of west-facing sand that catches spectacular sunsets every evening. The northern half near Duong Dong is where most resorts, restaurants, and beach bars are concentrated. The atmosphere is more relaxed than equivalent beaches in Thailand -- fewer touts and more space per person, even in peak season. The beach is clear and calm from November to April; seas pick up in low season. For the most beautiful beach experience, Sao Beach in the southeast is in a different league -- white powder sand and vivid turquoise water in a sheltered bay. A day trip from Long Beach is entirely feasible, but several small guesthouses and the recently opened Mango Bay resort also operate near Sao Beach for those who want to base there.
Culture & Local Life Explorers
Slow travellers — Foodies — History enthusiasts — Market lovers Duong Dong town at the northern end of Long Beach is the island's cultural heart. The Dinh Cau rock temple, the busy fish market, fish sauce factories, and the nightly Duong Dong Night Market are all walkable from hotels in this area. Staying here gives the most authentic daily-life experience on Phu Quoc -- you are a local resident, not a resort guest. Prices are lower and local food options are far more plentiful. Ham Ninh fishing village on the east coast is 25 minutes away -- a genuine community of stilt houses and working boats that has not been touched by resort development. The Phu Quoc Prison war museum, 20 minutes south, covers French and American-era detention camps in sobering detail. A motorbike from Duong Dong reaches these and the pepper farms in the interior within a 30-40 minute ride.
Families with Children
Families — Young children — Parents wanting safe swimming and easy logistics The northern part of Long Beach and the Ong Lang area are the best family bases. Long Beach has calm shallow water in dry season safe for children to swim, and an abundance of family-friendly restaurants and resort pools within walking distance. The Vinwonders theme park and Vinpearl Safari are both 30-40 minutes from any main resort area -- a clear full day for children and an easy taxi or shuttle ride from the hotel. Ong Lang Beach north of Long Beach is quieter, less developed, and more natural-feeling. Several boutique eco-resorts here have pools, gardens, and direct beach access in a setting that suits families wanting nature alongside the beach. The beach itself has rock pools and small creatures that entertain young children. The village behind the beach has a market and a handful of restaurants.

Couples — Honeymoons — Anniversaries — Proposal trips The southern coast near Sao Beach and the ultra-luxury resorts between Long Beach's southern half and An Thoi are the most romantic parts of Phu Quoc. Properties like the JW Marriott, Salinda, and Fusion Suites occupy private stretches of beach with infinity pools, overwater bungalows, and levels of service that match Maldives equivalents -- at significantly lower prices. The isolation and the vivid blue-green water create a genuinely otherworldly atmosphere. For couples who want romance without the ultra-luxury price, the boutique resorts along Ong Lang Beach offer private pool villas starting from USD 100-150 per night. The combination of a secluded beach, lush garden, and a personal pool is outstanding value compared to equivalent resorts in Thailand or Bali. Several Ong Lang properties also organise private beach dinners on request.

Divers — Snorkellers — Wildlife enthusiasts — Hikers An Thoi in the south is the gateway for Phu Quoc's best diving and snorkelling. The 15 islands of the An Thoi archipelago have healthy coral, excellent visibility (up to 15 m in dry season), and a good variety of reef fish, turtles, and rays. Whale sharks are occasionally sighted February to April. Several PADI-certified dive centres operate from Duong Dong and An Thoi. Staying in the southern part of Long Beach minimises the drive to the An Thoi departure pier. Phu Quoc National Park covers 31,000 hectares of primary rainforest -- the island's lush interior. The Suoi Tranh and Suoi Da Ban waterfalls are accessible from Duong Dong in under 30 minutes. The Vinpearl Safari offers a very different nature experience -- open-plan enclosures with free-roaming African and Asian animals. Kayaking through the Cua Can mangrove channels in the north is a quieter, more intimate encounter with the natural landscape.
Budget Travellers
Backpackers — Students — Long-term travellers — Solo adventurers Phu Quoc remains genuinely affordable despite its rapid resort development. Duong Dong town has the cheapest accommodation -- guesthouses and family-run mini-hotels from USD 12-25 per night with AC. The back lanes behind Long Beach also have budget options from USD 20-35. Renting a motorbike for USD 8-12 per day gives access to every beach, waterfall, and village on the island without needing to pay for taxis. The Duong Dong Night Market sells exceptional street food for 30,000-60,000 VND per dish (USD 1-2.50) -- grilled seafood, pho, bun quay (local noodle soup), and tropical fruit. The fish sauce factory tours and Dinh Cau temple are free. Snorkelling day trips cost USD 12-20 including lunch. The Hon Thom cable car is the one expensive activity (around USD 20) but is genuinely spectacular.

Tips for booking
- The best sunset spots on Long Beach fill up by 17:00 in peak season. Many beachfront bars set up day beds and sunbeds from early afternoon. Grab a spot by 16:00 for the golden hour. The sunset here is one of Vietnam's most spectacular -- the sky turns vivid orange and pink with nothing but open Gulf to the horizon.
- Stay in a guesthouse in Duong Dong town, not just on the beach strip. Several small family-run hotels just 200-300 m inland cost USD 15-30 per night with breakfast. You walk to the market and temples in minutes. Motorbike rental (USD 8-12/day) from the hotel gives you the whole island.
- Book a resort with a pool for low-season visits. If you travel May-October, the west coast sea can be rough and the pool becomes essential for children. Most Long Beach resorts have pools. Vinwonders and the Hon Thom cable car + water park are both weather-independent activities that work well on rainier days.
- Splurge on at least one sunset sailing trip. Several operators run evening cruises from Long Beach pier -- catamarans, traditional wooden boats, or private charters. The Gulf of Thailand turns extraordinary colours at dusk; watching the sun drop into the water from a deck with a drink is worth every cent and works as a romantic experience regardless of where you are staying.
- Snorkel day trips book out in peak season -- reserve the day before at the latest. The four-island tours from An Thoi pier depart at 08:00 and fill quickly December to March. Dive courses can also fill up -- contact dive centres in advance if you want to complete your PADI Open Water on the island.
- Eat at the Duong Dong Night Market, not the resort restaurants. The night market runs nightly from 18:00 near the Dinh Cau temple and is excellent value by any standard. A full meal with fresh seafood, rice, and a beer costs USD 4-8 per person. Resort beachfront restaurants charge 3-5x more for similar food.
