- Long wet season (May-October): the SW monsoon dumps 320-520 mm of rain per month, with July and September the wettest. Daily afternoon thunderstorms; 25-30 rainy days a month at peak.
- Dry sunny season (December-March): the NE monsoon brings dry stable air; rainfall drops to 40-70 mm/month and February averages just 9-10 rainy days. This is the prime tourism window.
- Transition months (April, November): warming/cooling phases; April is the hottest month before monsoon onset; November dries out quickly.
- Sheltered position: Phu Quoc sits in the Gulf of Thailand off Vietnam's SW tip — partly sheltered from the SW monsoon by the Cambodian coastline, but still receives substantial rain.
- Sea-temperature peak: Gulf of Thailand water reaches 31 °C in April-May; calm warm sea year-round.
- Cyclone-rare: at 10°N Phu Quoc sits below the typical typhoon track. Tropical depressions occasionally amplify wet-season rain but direct typhoon hits are very rare.

Is Phu Quoc good in the wet season?
Mid-priced. Heavy daily rain May-October (especially July-September) makes beach use unpredictable, and many activities are weather-deferred. Hotels are 30-50 % cheaper. Travellers who don't mind grey afternoons can still enjoy quiet beaches and good Vietnamese seafood.
Does Phu Quoc get typhoons?
Direct typhoon hits are very rare. Phu Quoc at 10°N is below the main typhoon track. Tropical depressions cross occasionally and amplify wet-season rain but classic typhoons rarely reach the SW Gulf of Thailand.
When is the best time for diving and snorkelling at Phu Quoc?
December to April — calm Gulf, visibility 10-20 m at the An Thoi reefs. Wet season visibility drops to 5-10 m and many tours pause. Local operators target the southern islands for the cleanest water.

Phu Quoc vs Koh Samui — which is better?
Different rhythms. Phu Quoc is dry December-March (similar to Samui's dry season Jan-Apr). Phu Quoc's wet season is May-October (SW monsoon — same as Andaman); Samui's is October-December (NE monsoon). November works for both; July-September favours Samui; July-September NOT favoured for Phu Quoc.
Is Phu Quoc developed or quiet?
Both. The west coast (Long Beach, Duong Dong) has rapid resort and apartment development; the south (An Thoi) has high-end resorts and a busy cable car; the north and east are quieter with rural villages and small bungalow stays.
