Sao Miguel has the Lagoa do Fogo trail (45 minutes to the pristine crater lake), the Sete Cidades caldera rim walk (8 km panoramic circuit) and the lush Nordeste viewpoint trails through laurel forest. Flores island is universally considered the most spectacular for waterfalls -- Poco do Bacalhau (100 m high free fall) and Poco da Alagoinha among the finest. The basalt columns of Rocha dos Bordoes rise 20 m and form one of the most striking geological formations in Europe. - Tip Base yourself on Pico for whale watching. The island's deep-water channel (the Pico-Faial canal) is the most reliable spot in the Azores for sightings. Lajes do Pico has the most experienced operators. Combine with a Faial day trip by ferry (30 minutes) for Capelinhos and Horta marina.
- Tip For the widest hiking variety, base yourself on Sao Miguel and take a 4-5 day trip to Flores separately.
