Tindari – Santuario & Teatro Greco

Historic site

Tindari is an ancient Greek city perched on a rocky promontory on Sicily's Tyrrhenian coast, founded in 396 BC by Dionysius I of Syracuse. Its archaeological zone contains the remains of a Hellenistic theatre with panoramic views over the Aeolian Islands, Roman houses with mosaic floors, and sections of the original Greek city wall. Below the promontory, the Laghetti di Marinello lagoons -- formed by sand from the nearby Rosmarino river -- create a distinctive natural landscape visible from the hilltop.
