The water is brilliantly clear and the setting is dramatic without being overdeveloped. It remains one of the most beautiful beaches in the Sporades. Panormos Bay, further north, offers a sheltered sandy beach with calm water ideal for families and swimmers. Kastani beach, the famous Mamma Mia filming location for the bar scene, is a small pebbly cove hemmed in by dramatic rocky outcrops and thick pine trees. It is more scenic than spacious, but utterly photogenic. Stafylos beach on the southeast coast is the closest organised beach to Skopelos Town -- a short walk or taxi from the Chora.
Mamma Mia Fans
Film lovers · ABBA fans · Bucket-list travellers · Photography enthusiasts Skopelos was the primary filming location for the 2008 Mamma Mia movie. The iconic Agios Ioannis chapel, perched on a sheer rocky pinnacle above the sea on the north coast, was used for the wedding scene. The climb up 112 steps cut into the rock is a rite of passage for Mamma Mia pilgrims -- the views from the top over the Aegean and neighbouring Alonissos are extraordinary. Bring water for the climb. Kastani beach on the west coast was the beach bar scene location -- the small cove with its dramatic pine-backed rocky setting is immediately recognisable. The actual bar no longer operates as a film set but the beach retains its atmosphere. Glossa village on the north hilltop provided additional exteriors for the film. A dedicated Mamma Mia tour from Skopelos Town covers all filming locations in half a day.

The whitewashed cubic houses, 120+ churches and chapels, narrow stone-paved alleys, and the hilltop Venetian castle create a strikingly photogenic townscape. Sunset from the castle walls over the rooftops and harbour is exceptional. The waterfront is lined with excellent seafood tavernas ideal for long romantic dinners. Glossa, the traditional hilltop village in the north, offers a more intimate and quieter alternative. Its stone-paved lanes, old olive presses and panoramic views across the Aegean make it one of the most characterful villages in the Sporades. The entire island -- with pine forests, monastery trails and hidden coves -- lends itself to slow travel and peaceful exploration.

Over 120 churches and chapels dot the Chora -- some Byzantine, some Venetian-influenced, many perched on hilltops above the whitewashed town. The Venetian castle (Kastro) at the crown of the Chora commands panoramic views and houses a 9th-century church within its walls. The town's architecture survived the 1965 earthquake better than most Sporades islands. Evangelistria Monastery, dating from the 18th century, is the most important active monastery on the island -- perched on the forested hillside above Skopelos Town with sweeping views. Several other monasteries (Metamorfosis, Prodromos, Episkopi) are reachable by hiking trails through pine and olive forest. The island's folklore museum in the Chora provides context on traditional Sporades life.

The island has a network of old stone-paved kalderimi (mule paths) linking monasteries, villages and beaches that pre-date roads. These trails offer exceptional hiking through cool pine shade with glimpses of the sea between the trees. The paths around Evangelistria Monastery are the most popular and accessible from Skopelos Town. The island's olive groves and plum orchards are part of its agricultural heritage -- Skopelos plums are regionally famous and made into prunes and liqueur. Guided hiking tours from Skopelos Town cover the monastery circuit, the castle-to-coast trail and the north coast road to Glossa. Birdwatching in the pine forests is rewarding in spring and autumn migration seasons.

Tips for booking
- Tip Stay near Panormos or Milia for the best beach experience. Milia offers the finest scenery; Panormos offers calmer water and more facilities. Both require a car or scooter from Skopelos Town (20-30 minutes). The west coast road through pine forest is part of the pleasure.
- Tip Visit Agios Ioannis chapel early morning or late afternoon. Midday heat makes the 112-step climb hard work, and crowds from Skiathos day-trip boats arrive around 11am. Go at 8-9am for photographs without crowds and cooler conditions. The chapel interior is tiny but worth the climb.
- Tip Book a room with a sea view in Skopelos Town for the most romantic base. The Chora is compact and walkable -- everything is within 10 minutes on foot. Choose accommodation on the upper lanes for town views and the lower waterfront for harbour activity. May and September are ideal months for couples.
- Tip Base yourself in Skopelos Town for the best access to history and culture. The Chora is a living museum -- wandering the lanes between churches and through the castle gate is itself an experience. Monastery hikes from Town take 1-2 hours each and pass through beautiful pine forest.
- Tip Skopelos Town is the ideal base for nature and hiking. Most monastery trails start from the upper lanes of the Chora. The 80% forest coverage means trails are shaded even in midsummer. Early morning starts (7-9am) before heat builds up make for the most pleasant walking.
