Car rental in Skopelos

Skopelos has no airport -- visitors fly to Skiathos (JSI) and take a 1-hour ferry. Car rental is available on Skopelos in Skopelos Town and Glossa. The island is 96 km2 and heavily forested -- the main road runs north-south from Skopelos Town to Glossa. A car opens up Panormos, Milia and Kastani beaches on the west coast and allows day trips to Glossa village and its viewpoints. Note: the road to Kastani (Mamma Mia beach) is narrow and steep.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a car to explore Skopelos?
A car is recommended for Skopelos if you want to visit beaches beyond Skopelos Town. The main road north to Glossa and west to Panormos, Milia and Kastani passes through dense pine forest. Taxis exist but are expensive for the longer routes. The road to Kastani is narrow and steep -- drive carefully.
Can I bring a car to Skopelos by ferry?
Yes. Car ferries run between Skiathos, Skopelos and Alonissos operated by Hellenic Seaways. Alternatively, rent a car locally on Skopelos -- several agencies operate in Skopelos Town and Glossa. Local rental avoids the ferry cost and gives you a vehicle suited to the island roads.
When should I book a car in Skopelos?
Book 2-3 weeks ahead for July and August. Skopelos is less busy than Mykonos or Santorini but the rental fleet is very small. Local agencies in Skopelos Town have limited stock, especially for peak season. Shoulder season (May-June, September-October) sees much lower demand and prices.
What is the road to Kastani beach like?
The road to Kastani beach (the Mamma Mia filming location) descends steeply from the main road through pine forest on a narrow single-track road. It is manageable in a compact car but requires caution, especially when passing oncoming traffic. Allow extra time and avoid driving at night.
