The coastal route along the spectacular north and east cliffs is the most scenic -- passing Hammershus fortress, the rock carvings at Madsebakke, the fishing villages of Tejn, Gudhjem and Svaneke, and the art museum above Helligdomsklipperne. The round-island route can be completed in 2-3 days at a leisurely pace. Electric bikes are widely available for hire in Ronne, Gudhjem and Svaneke. Cycling infrastructure is excellent -- bike paths are well-maintained, signed and largely separate from motor traffic. Bicycle-friendly accommodation is widespread; many guesthouses and campsites offer secure storage and repair stands. The Bornholm Rundt cycling event attracts thousands of participants each summer. Families with children find the gentler southern routes around Nexo and Balka accessible; the hilly northern routes near Hammershus and Allinge suit experienced riders.

Hammershus fortress on the northwest headland is the largest medieval castle ruin in Scandinavia -- built around 1250 by the Archbishop of Lund, it commands the Baltic from a dramatic 74-metre clifftop. The four round churches -- Osterlars, Nyker, Nylars and Ols -- are unique 12th-century structures found nowhere else in Denmark. Their circular design and thick walls served a dual purpose as both churches and defensive refuges. Osterlars, the largest, dates from approximately 1150. The Bornholm Museum in Ronne covers the island's full history from the Bronze Age to the present, including the remarkable story of the 1946 Soviet bombing of Ronne and Nexo. The Rock Art site at Madsebakke contains Bronze Age ship carvings visible on flat rock surfaces near Allinge. The Bornholm Art Museum above Helligdomsklipperne is Denmark's only art museum purpose-built around a natural landscape. Aa Kirke (Aakirkeby) is the island's oldest and largest church, dating from the 12th century.

The island's smoked herring (roget sild) is a Danish institution -- prepared in traditional smoke houses (rogeri) using alder wood, served with dark rye bread, raw onion and a cold beer. Gudhjem Rogerier and Hasle Rogerier are the most traditional; the villages of Gudhjem and Hasle are the best bases for smoky fish experiences. Svaneke Bryghus is one of Denmark's most celebrated craft breweries, producing award-winning beers in a converted 18th-century building overlooking the harbour. The island's food festival in September draws top Danish chefs to a week-long celebration of local produce. Bornholm's unusually sunny climate supports strawberry farms, herb gardens and small-scale dairy production -- the island's rygeost (smoked fresh cheese) is unique to Bornholm. The creative community around ceramics (Hjorths Fabrik in Ronne) and glassblowing (Bornholm Glass Centre) has given the island a strong arts-and-crafts identity that attracts discerning travellers year-round.
Beaches & Families

Dueodde is the finest -- a vast expanse of white powdery sand backed by pine forest and rolling dunes, with exceptionally fine sand that has been used in hourglasses for centuries. The beach is enormous by Baltic standards and rarely feels crowded. Balka Beach just east of Nexo is a popular family alternative with shallower water and gentle gradients safe for children. Snogebakken near Nexo is a quieter nature beach favoured by locals. The north and east coasts have a more dramatic rocky character with small sheltered coves (especially around Helligpeder and Arnager) rather than long sandy stretches. Vang Beach on the west coast has a wild, exposed character. Water temperatures peak at 18-21 C in July and August. The south coast around Dueodde and Balka has the most consistent summer sunshine on the island (Bornholm averages 2,100 sunshine hours per year -- more than anywhere else in Denmark).

Nexo / South Coast

Tips for booking
- Tip Stay in Gudhjem or Svaneke to be at the heart of the east-coast cycling routes. Both villages have direct access to the coastal path in both directions and are the most photogenic bases on the island. Book a place with bike storage. Bring or rent a bike with at least 21 speeds for the hilly northwest; e-bikes are strongly recommended if your group includes mixed fitness levels.
- Tip Base yourself in Allinge for the best access to Hammershus and the northwest heritage sites. Allinge is 5 km from the fortress and has pleasant harbourside accommodation. From Allinge you can also reach the Madsebakke rock carvings and the Hammeren nature headland on foot. The four round churches are spread across the island's interior -- a car or full-day cycling loop is needed to visit all four.
- Tip Stay in Gudhjem or Svaneke for the best access to food and craft culture. Gudhjem is the smoked herring capital of the island -- the harbour smokehouse is steps from the water. Svaneke has the brewery plus the best concentration of galleries, artisan shops and gourmet restaurants. The drive or cycle between the two (15 km along the coast) is one of the most scenic stretches on the island.
- Tip For beach-focused stays, base yourself near Nexo on the southeast coast -- Dueodde and Balka are within 10 minutes by car or bike. Nexo has supermarkets and practical facilities. Note that the south coast has fewer restaurants and attractions compared to the east coast fishing villages -- a car or e-bike is useful for day trips to Gudhjem and Svaneke. Dueodde Camping is directly at the beach for the full dune experience.
