Blue Grotto

Nature

The Blue Grotto refers to a series of sea caverns on the southwest coast of Malta, a short distance from the tiny fishing harbour of Wied iz-Zurrieq. The caves are formed in the limestone cliffs of the Qrendi coastline, and their interiors glow with extraordinary blues caused by sunlight refracting through the water. The largest cave reaches approximately 25 metres in height. Visitors reach the caves by traditional wooden boats departing from the Wied iz-Zurrieq inlet, typically in the morning when the light is strongest.
