Filfla — Nature Reserve

Filfla is a small, largely barren and uninhabited islet lying 4.5 kilometres south of the Maltese coast, forming the southernmost point of the Maltese Archipelago. The name is believed to derive from the Arabic word felfel, meaning peppercorn, and the island was marked simply as Pepper Island on nautical charts before the 17th century. Filfla is now a strictly protected nature reserve, home to colonies of storm petrels and the endemic Filfla wall lizard. Access is restricted to scientific researchers only.
