Rabat – katakomby sv. Pavla

Historic site

St Paul's Catacombs in Rabat are among Malta's most extensive early Christian burial sites, comprising a labyrinthine network of underground galleries and rock-cut tombs dating from the 3rd to the 8th centuries AD. The catacombs lie immediately outside the walls of Mdina, following the Roman custom of burying the dead beyond city limits. Distinctive features include agape tables, carved canopied tombs and circular pit graves. The site illustrates the transition from pagan to Christian burial practices on the island.
