St. Paul's Cathedral Mdina

St Paul's Cathedral in Mdina is the principal Catholic church of the ancient walled capital, built on a site where tradition holds that the Roman governor Publius met the Apostle Paul after his shipwreck off Malta around 60 AD. The original 12th-century cathedral was severely damaged in the earthquake of 1693. It was dismantled and rebuilt in an elegant Baroque style to designs by Maltese architect Lorenzo Gafa between 1696 and 1705, a work considered his finest achievement. The interior features richly painted vaulted ceilings and a notable treasury.
