Rotunda di Mosta (Mosta Dome)

Historic site

The Rotunda of Mosta, formally the Sanctuary Basilica of the Assumption of Our Lady, is a monumental neoclassical church with one of the largest unsupported domes in the world. It was built between 1833 and the 1860s to designs by architect Giorgio Grognet de Vasse, on the site of an earlier Renaissance church from 1614. The dome spans 37.2 metres internally, placing it among the largest in Europe. The church became famous when a German bomb pierced the dome during a service in April 1942 but failed to detonate.
