The Victoria Lines are a 12-kilometre chain of fortifications built by the British colonial authorities in the late 19th century, spanning the full width of Malta from Fomm ir-Rih on the west coast to Madliena in the northeast. The fortifications follow the natural Great Fault escarpment that divides the lower-lying northern districts from the more densely populated south. Comprising a continuous wall, several fortified redoubts and gun emplacements, the lines were built to slow any invasion force advancing from the north.
