Ġgantija Temples – Gozo (UNESCO)

Historic site

Ggantija is a megalithic temple complex in Xaghra on the island of Gozo, among the oldest freestanding stone structures in the world. The two temples were built during the Neolithic period, making them more than 5,500 years old and older than both Stonehenge and the Egyptian pyramids. Their builders erected massive limestone blocks, some weighing over 50 tonnes, without the use of metal tools or the wheel. UNESCO designated Ggantija as a World Heritage Site as part of the Megalithic Temples of Malta inscription.
