Gozo – Citadela Victoria (UNESCO – tentativní)

Historic site

The Cittadella is the historic citadel at the heart of Victoria, the capital of Gozo. The area has been continuously inhabited since the Bronze Age, and the site is believed to have served as the acropolis of the Punic-Roman city of Gaulos. The current walls date mainly from the 17th century, rebuilt by the Order of St John following an Ottoman raid in 1551 that enslaved much of the island's population. Within the walls stand a cathedral, four museums and several palaces offering panoramic views across Gozo.
