Grandmaster's Palace

Historic site

The Grandmaster's Palace in the centre of Valletta was built between the 16th and 18th centuries as the seat of the Grand Master of the Knights Hospitaller, who governed Malta from 1530 to 1798. After the Knights were expelled by Napoleonic France in 1798, the building became the National Palace and later, under British rule from 1800, served as the Governor's Palace. Today it functions as the official residence of the President of Malta and houses an extraordinary armoury with thousands of medieval weapons.
