The Grand Harbour, also known as the Port of Valletta, is a natural deep-water harbour on the northeastern shore of Malta that has served as the island's principal port since ancient times. Extensively modified over the centuries with docks, wharves and fortifications, the harbour has accommodated some of the largest warships and merchant fleets in Mediterranean history. The Knights of St John built their principal naval facilities here after arriving in 1530, and the harbour witnessed the arrival of key Allied convoys during the Second World War.
