Senglea — promontory above harbour

Senglea, formally titled Citta Invicta, is a fortified city on a narrow promontory in the Grand Harbour, one of the Three Cities along with Birgu and Cospicua. Its title of Invicta, meaning unconquered, was awarded for its resistance during the Great Siege of Malta in 1565. The city takes its name from Grand Master Claude de la Sengle, who fortified it in the 1550s. Despite its small land area, Senglea is the second most densely populated locality in Malta after Sliema, with approximately 2,720 inhabitants.
